  1. The programme is available to the candidates who have BLIS Degree or its equivalent from any recognised university and similar institutions.
  2. Weightage will be given to the candidates having working experience in libraries, information centre or other related organisations.
Information is a pervasive element in contemporary society, the development of which will depend upon the future shape of information services particularly with the usage of Information Communication Technologies. To this end in view, IGNOU launched its Masters Degree Programme in Library and Information Science (MLIS) in 1994. The revised version of the programme was launched from July 2005.

Information access, processing, organisation and dissemination are the core components. Unlike the MLIS Courses of other Universities, MLIS programme puts emphasis on handling and access to information in all forms rather than the conventional library activities. The popularity of the course has resulted in spreading its wing to other countries also like Mauritius, Dubai, Kuwait, etc.

The Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) is a post-graduate professional programme. In other words, the basic admission requirement is that a candidate must possess a professional degree in Library and Information Science from any recognised university. It is a post graduate degree in Library and Information Science after a Professional Degree in that subject, and is of one year duration (this is mostly so even in the conventional system).

The examination relating to MLIS Degree has two components:

I) Continuous evaluations 30%

ii) Terminal examination 70%

Continuous evaluation is related to the assignments that each student has to submit including participation in seminars and practical assignments for exposure to information Technology, which a student has to successfully complete. Every student has to complete and submit one assignment for each of the courses expects MLIP-002 for which there is no assignment. The Tutor Marked Assignment are to be submitted to the Coordinator of the concerned Study Centre. The evaluation of the performance of the performance of the students in Tutor Marked Assignment will be done by the counsellors and mark/ grades will be awarded to each student. Terminal examinations for all the eight courses constitute the second part of the examination. Answer scripts relating to the final (Terminal) examination will also be evaluated as per the system of marks. For projects/dissertations, there is no continuous evaluation.

On the basis of the aggregate marks obtained in all the courses (theory, practicals and project work) the division will be awarded as under :

To fulfill the requirements of MLIS Degree Programme, a candidate has to score a minimum of 40% marks in both continuous evaluation and at the final Term End Examination. Those candidates scoring less than 40% will be considered as having failed in the examination and will not be entitled to receive a Degree from the University. For the project/dissertation (Course MLIP-002), a candidate has to secure a minimum of 50% to pass in this course. Candidates who obtain a failure aggregate or who miss to attend the terminal examination may appear at the subsequent terminal examination and complete the Programme. A learner should not apply for appearing at the term-end examination of any courses without getting registered for the same and that if he/she does so, his/her result would not be declared and the onus shall be on him/her.
